The Leadership Model – Mourinho & Waterboy

The Leadership Model – Mourinho & Waterboy = “The Mourinho Code”

Football Leadership Coaching Model Mourinho WaterboyAbout the leadership model
Above you see my interpretation of Jose Mourinhos leadership. I have combined a few different models and theories to an own leadership model which I have dubbed “The Mourinho Code“ It is these elements that I think Jose Mourinho is masterful in getting in place in the teams he works with. The success of a group is linked to how well you get the various blocks in place. “We lead the league with nine points. Is it because we have been lucky? Of course not. It’s about anything else but lucky when you’re talking about my players. “ /José Mourinho

Leader responsibility vs Team Responsibility
Scale:
The Scale above describes the share of responsibilities between the leader and the team. Of course the leader is always ultimately responsible for all aspects and in particular for the teams results, but it is the team that delivers results. Leader’s main parts are in the beginning, with the creation of energy / motivation and to focus the energy through the formulation of objectives or goals.

Energy / Motivation
To explain why we do something or why have to do things a certain way is the foundation, together with the description of the obstacles/threats and opportunities.

“From here each practice, each game, each minute of your social life must center on the aim of being champions” “First-teamer will not be a correct word. I need all of you. You need each other. We are a TEAM.” (in a letter sent to the players) / José Mourinho

Goals / Direction
When the energy / motivation is there by understanding why. You need to direct the energy/motivation with formulation of objectives / statements / imaginary pictures etc. What is the target? You have a limited amount of energy, make sure you direct it on right things!

“I want to see Mr. Moratti hold the trophy and see him crying.” / José Mourinho

“I must defend what is mine. At the moment it’s my Champions League. I’m the last winner – so it’s my competition“. ”I am absolutely SURE That We Will be champions next season. “
/ José Mourinho

Teamwork = Capacity + team spirit – Co-operational Losses
The three parts in the middle are about teamwork within the team, and the parts are picked from Steiner’s model, and describes the group’s cooperation and the conditions to achieve results. Steiner’s model is based on that we can strengthen within our team, capacity and team spirit and try to minimize the third, co-operational losses. Capacity can be e.g. as equipment, training and utilization of, knowledge, skills, physical, mental skills, etc. Team spirit can be difficult to define, it is something that exists in the group and makes the team stronger. We-esteem, security, appreciation, positive climate, could be a few key words when talking about team spirit. Co-operational Losses example as unclear roles, wrong positions on the field, bad passes, in short, all errors, which complicates and degrades the team.
Co-operational losses consist mainly of two categories, co-ordination losses and motivation problems. Motivational losses tend to occur when the team size increases, then you suddenly don’t get 100% from each team member, this phenomenon is called social loafing.

“We have top class players and, sorry if I sound arrogant, we have a coach of the highest class.” “In general terms we must think more about our football and not play by instinct.”
/ José Mourinho (See also statement, in energy block)

Results
What have you achieved? Visualize what you have achieved, hard and soft results. Small and Large. Short and long term.

“We’re not entertaining? Okay, I do not care: we win …“/ José Mourinho

Feedback
How was the performance? What did we do well? What could be improved? What have we learned? What do we take with us in the future? Your feedback will affect all the parts in the model, energy, direction of energry, teamwork and what results you will achieve in the future.

“We Would Have Won this game even with seven players. Maybe with six we would have struggled, but we would Have Won with seven. ” / José Mourinho

“I hate to speak about players individually. Players Do Not win trophies, squads win trophies… I love players who love to win. They not only win in 90 minutes, But Every Day, Every training session, in every moment Of Their Lives “. / José Mourinho

Categorize your earlier knowledge
Probably you already have a good knowledge of many of the blocks, this is just a way to structure it. The Jose Mourinho statements are in some case at the “edge” or even extreme and therefore you need to find your own ways of expressing things, but I think his statements visualizes clearly e.g. his goals/targets for the next season. The goals are clear for all involved players, people round the team, even the media and the fans.

Analyze your teams strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats – SWOT
Use the blocks to analyze your own team, where you are strong and where are you lagging. You can use the model on different levels, for the whole organization, for the team, group of players (e.g. goalies, defense, midfielders, forwards) and for individual players and of course for you self as a coach. It’s also suitable for the whole season, each practice or a drill on your practice. Why are we having this drill? What’s the purpose of it? What/who do you need? What are the teaching points (to avoid the co-operational losses)? How was the result? What could you see? How did the players feel they performed? What worked well? What can be improved?

This is the model on an overall level and we will now start to dig into each part deeply, I personally find it better to give you the whole picture on an overall level before going in to the details, that’s so you don’t need to try to figure out how the picture of this puzzle looks like when you are reading the details.

I hope you get some guidance in solving “The Mourinho Code” through this model and the following pages in this football coaching and leadership blog.

This is why many coaches express the importance of practicing your kicks during soccer training. There are numerous methods that you can use to ensure success when practicing this particular aspect of your soccer game. Here, we will outline some general ways that you can increase the overall effectiveness of your kick.

One of the first ways of practicing your kicks during soccer practice is to enlist the assistance of a friend or relative. This person should roll, kick, or throw the soccer ball to you in many different ways, and rates of speed. This will reflect accurate game play and allow you the opportunity to practice both the ground kick and the volley kick. When practicing with another person to benefit your soccer training, it is important to make sure that both of you have the proper protective equipment on to reduce the chance of an injury occurring.

Sportsmanship in Soccer Training and Coaching

As a soccer training coach, you are responsible for many things. Your team members should understand the basic rules of soccer, they should know and understand all the positions in soccer, they must know how to perform many techniques, and they must develop personally in skills, and be able to hold their own on the field. However, there is one main responsibility that is often forgotten when it comes to effectively coaching during soccer training sessions. This is the responsibility of promoting sportsmanship as a soccer training coach.

Sportsmanship is very simple to understand. It means to display a high sense of pride in the game play, the rules, the ethics, and the fun in a game. As a soccer training coach, it is imperative that you lay the basic foundation for good sportsmanship during soccer training. As a matter of fact, this should come before all those fancy dribbling techniques, kicking positions, heading methods, and other aspects of soccer training.

The first way that you can promote sportsmanship as a soccer training coach is to teach your team that having fun comes before everything else. While winning is an important aspect of a sports team, it is not a very rewarding experience if the team did not have fun winning. Many times, the team that wins only does so for the coach of the team and not for themselves if they did not have fun doing it. Unfortunately, there are many teams out there that only play for their coach. It is your responsibility to ensure that your team is not doing this. If they are, you should put a stop to it immediately and let them know to just play a good, fun game and only win for themselves.

When promoting sportsmanship during soccer training, it is important that you shift the focus from “competition” to “cooperation”. While a little bit of competition is good for the soul, it is not good to solely focus on this aspect during soccer training. Cooperation is a great way to develop team unity and show the importance of being fair. Additionally, it displays to the members of the team that everyone has a special place in the team and that one position is not better or worse than another position. By instilling this value in your team, you will experience more success during soccer training.

When promoting sportsmanship during soccer training, it is imperative that you coach and encourage each individual that you are responsible for. Many coaches have a tendency to display favoritism to various members on a team. You should be fair and unbiased in all of your interactions during soccer training. Not only will this motivate your team, but you will be better at training and developing each person on the team to ensure that they perform their best.

It is always important to understand that promoting good sportsmanship during soccer training is the most important job that you have as a coach. If you fail to remember this, you may find your team in disarray. You may also experience many failures. It is more important to strengthen an entire team at its foundation then to try to get a wall to move out of the way.

This holds true even when a person is practicing to improve their game play in soccer training. Cramps are often a condition that comes and goes quickly, but the pain that is experienced while having them can be tremendous. In this article, you will learn various steps to avoid cramping during soccer training.

The first thing that you should understand is that there are many different types of cramps, and they can be experienced for a variety of reasons. Cramps are the process in which various muscles experience a spasm that is involuntary. Cramps can result from various changes throughout the body, atmospheric conditions, heavy exercise, and even serious medical conditions and diseases. If you experience a cramp during soccer training, it is essential to try to determine the underlying cause of the cramp. This will help you to better prevent this issue from occurring in the future.

The second thing that you should do when attempting to avoid cramps during soccer training is to avoid large meals prior to engaging in physical activities. Not only can this lead to cramps, but it can make you very sick – especially if the weather is warm. You should eat lightly prior to engaging in soccer practice. Once the training session is complete, you may then eat a large meal as long as you are cooled down and relaxed.

The third thing that you can do to prevent the onset of cramps during soccer practice is to make sure that your clothing and soccer equipment fits properly. Enough Rest at Night during Soccer Training

In order to make the most of your soccer training, it is important to get plenty of rest. Many people do not realize just how physically challenging soccer training can be on the body. Sleep is the process in which the body replenishes itself. While training to be an effective soccer player, the muscles are exposed to tremendous strain. If you are able to get plenty of rest, the body will regenerate and repair any muscles in the body that have experienced any damage or strain. Here, you will find many effective steps to get enough rest at night during soccer training.

The first step to get enough rest at night during soccer training is to make certain that you limit the amount of caffeine that you consume during the day. While it is important to ensure that you drink plenty of fluids throughout the day while you are training to increase your abilities in soccer, you should limit that to water. It is important that you drink at least ten glasses of water or more a day. Not only will this help you to get the right amount of rest, you will be hydrated and your performance during training will increase.

When you are engaging in soccer training activities throughout the day, it is essential that you try to wind down and get to bed early. You may be tempted to take a nap after training, but this is often best avoided. Taking a nap throughout the day may result in difficulties in getting to sleep at night and resting appropriately. If you feel that you absolutely must get a little rest after training, you may do so. However, you should not exceed thirty minutes when resting throughout the day.

If you are having problems getting the right amount of rest during soccer training, you may want to take a look at the environment in which you sleep. It is important to have your sleep area set up to maximize the potential of a good night’s rest. You should first start with your bed. Is it large and comfortable? Is the mattress quality efficient? Do you have the right pillows to sleep on? Is the room cool and dark and free of distractions? If you have all that you need to sleep comfortably, and the overall environment is set up properly, you should be able to rest well during soccer training.

If you are trying to get enough rest at night during soccer training, you should avoid consuming a large meal prior to bedtime. Doing this will result in the digestion process creating an uncomfortable state of relaxation. If you are going to eat close to bedtime, it is important that you allow at least two hours afterwards before trying to rest. This will give the body a good amount of time to cycle the food and beverages that you have ingested. By the time you decide to go to bed, you should be able to rest peacefully.

Getting enough rest during soccer training is important. While engaging in soccer training, you will be introduced to a lot of new concepts and material. Additionally, your body will face many physical challenges. Getting the right amount of sleep during this time will ensure that you are performing at your best.

Head Injuries during Soccer Training

While many soccer training sessions are completed with absolutely no injuries, many are not so successful. There are many different kinds of situations that may arise when it comes to soccer training. Virtually any part of the body may be injured when one is practicing to increase their skill and ability in soccer. However, one specific location of the body is prone to injury in this particular sports training event. That is the head. The head is used in many technique applications in soccer. Here, you will learn how to handle head injuries during soccer training.

The first thing that you can do as a coach is to educate yourself properly when it comes to injuries that you may have to handle in the soccer playing field. When studying injuries to the head, you should ensure that you understand all the different kinds of situations that may occur, the signs that they have occurred, the symptoms that may be experienced by an individual, and what you can do to assist in the individual in the way of first aid. One particular topic that you should review thoroughly as it is quite common is a head concussion.

When a person experiences a head concussion, it means that they have experienced a bruise, or series of broken blood vessels, to the brain area. This can be an extremely dangerous situation. It can be caused from a simple blow to the head from a soccer ball, or being accidentally tapped or hit by another player on the field. When a person experiences this, they may actually pass out. You may find that the individual complains of a headache if they do not pass out. They may also experience a loss in memory, issues with balance and coordination, or even become physically ill.

As the coach of the soccer training session, it is important to identify the situation quickly. You should make certain that you call for assistance immediately. It is always a good idea to keep a cell phone on hand for emergencies. You should stabilize the head of the individual and make sure that no one moves the person until medical help arrives. Only medical professionals, such as paramedics, an on site nurse or doctor or other trained individual should attempt to move the injured person.

There are other head injuries that may occur to the head area during soccer training. The two most common include nosebleeds and black eyes. If a nosebleed occurs, a person should be given a cloth and requested to sit in a position that is comfortable for them. They should then try to pinch the nose shut for just a few minutes. This usually helps to stop the bleeding that is occurring. If the nose appears to be broke, call medical help as soon as possible. If someone experiences a black eye during soccer training, it is important to give the person ice or an ice pack to place on the eye in order to reduce swelling and reduce the pain that is associated with this particular injury.
